  Frequent falls - and how to avoid them
  As we grow older muscles gradually weaken, joints stiffen, bones become soft and brittle, and lung function reduces, walking & balance alters.

Aging should be accepted gracefully. 30% aging is due to genetics and 70% is due to change in life style - THIS IS UNDER OUR CONTROL.

Falls are very common in elderly persons. Intervention attempts to improve functional capacity can prevent or minimize the frequency of falls.

Household hazards: slippery bathroom, less light
Depression
Eye sight
Personality changes
High blood pressure
Hearing impairment
Arthritic changes

Regular, general & breathing exercises
Group classes
Balancing Exercises.

Touch the bed with leg & hand before sitting
Use cushion footwear
Use night light
Use stick or walker even for a short distance.
 
   
  Prevention of Osteoporosis
  Women---take action before they break a bone.

Osteoporosis is defined as " Metabolic bone disease" i.e. Low bone mass, which increases risk of fractures.(especially in old age) Bone mass is measured Bone Mineral Density (BMD), it declines after the age of 35 years, it has been observed that after manopause 3 % bone mass reduces per year for 5 years.

The common site for the fractures are - wrist, hip bone & spine.

The most common problem after menopause is obesity, hot flushes, aches & pains etc.

Take calsium and vitamin D from young adult age-in natural food
Minimize chances of injury
Modify the Life style
Regular Exercises
Get DEXA test done- (Bone Mineral Density Test)

Exercises against gravity is benificial, it should be done under the supervision of a qualified Physiotherapist
Do breathing exercises - hot flushes may reduce.
Brisk walk atleast 4 days a week
Recreation Activities - indoor for older people
If any pain is present in joints, consult Orthopedic surgeon and Physiotherapist.

Reduce the risk of fractures –prevent falls
Light weight shoes with low heels
Avoid slippery surface especially in the bathroom
For strong bones eat nutritious food-
The recommended intake of calsium is 1000-1200 mg/day after the age of 40, but should be taken under the supervision of the doctor.
